Years 1 and 2
During Years 1 and 2, teaching continues to be just as interactive and exciting, but lessons become more formal. The children are expected to concentrate for longer periods, to think for themselves and discover how to solve problems.
Our curriculum is based on the National Curriculum, in which the basic skills of numeracy and literacy are fundamentally important. It also includes the wider investigative skills of science, geography, history, technology including ICT and art. Many of the topics taught are supplemented by external visits to bring learning to life for the children.
ICT is an integral part of the curriculum and as well as using ICT during lessons, Year 1 and 2 children have weekly lessons in a dedicated ICT suite.
P.E. and music are taught by subject specialist teachers and we have extra-curricular music and sport.
Preparation for the Junior Preparatory Schools
Throughout their time at Kindergarten, children are continually assessed and take part in Key Stage 1 SATs tests at the end of Year 2. This information is shared openly with parents and used to enhance the continuity and progression from Kindergarten to the preparatory schools at Hulme Court for boys and Estcourt for girls.
During Year 2 the staff of the preparatory schools visit the children at Kindergarten and the children visit the preparatory schools. This ensures that the transition from one phase of education to the next is smooth.
