Nursery and Reception

The curriculum within Nursery is split into the following areas:

Communication Language and Literacy

This is taught in many ways and in a number of different styles. Each aspect of speaking, listening, reading and writing is taught through carefully planned activities. This means that children begin to read and write when they are ready.

Mathematical Development

Mathematical development depends very much on becoming confident and competent in learning and using key mathematical skills. This area of learning includes sorting, counting, matching, seeking patterns, recognising relationships and working with numbers, shapes, space and measures.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Successful personal, social and emotional development is critical for young children in all aspects of their lives and gives them the best opportunity for success in all other areas of learning.

It is also about developing respect for others, social competence and a positive disposition to learn. We teach this by including role play, celebrating festivals, playing games to develop turn taking and sharing skills and circle time.

Knowledge and Understanding of the World

In this area of learning, children are developing the crucial knowledge, skills and understanding that help them to make sense of the world. This forms the foundation for later work in science, design and technology, history, geography and information and communication technology (ICT).

Creative Development

This area of learning involves art and craft, music, dance, role-play and imaginative play. We include activities such as painting, junk modelling, using instruments in music, drama, play people and sand, water and messy play. All children have a weekly music lesson with our specialist teacher.

Physical Development

Physical Development in the foundation stage is about improving skills of co-ordination, control, manipulation and movement.

Physical Development has two other very important aspects. It helps children to gain confidence in what they can do and enables them to feel the positive benefits of being healthy and active.

Activities include outdoor play, music and movement, ball games, bicycle and scooters.

All children also have a dedicated P.E. and swimming lesson with subject specialist teachers.
