Around the World in eight hours!
News posted: 01-03-2010
On Friday 26th February Estcourt pupils set off from Hulme Airport with their passports and travelled around the world in eight hours. They were taught Greek dancing by Mrs Gabrilatsou who had the girls’ balancing cups of water on their heads whilst dancing.
Dr Chowdhury came in to speak to the girls about Bangladesh. They discovered that the National flower of Bangladesh is the water lily; there is a sculpture of a water lily on the roundabout near Tesco in Oldham. Bangladesh is also the home of the Bengali tiger. Saira and Sabiha made chicken tandoori to sample and the girls also feasted on samosas and onion bhajis!
Yoko Hayakawa took us all the way to Japan where we learnt about Japanese culture and language. She taught us how to fold origami and dressed some of the girls in kimonos.
Mrs Allwood from the senior school showed us how to make Samurai helmets from newspaper.
We then fastened our seatbelts for a journey to Italy where Ms Campbell taught us how to count and hold a conversation about ourselves in Italian. We couldn’t leave Italy without sampling Neapolitan ice cream! Mrs Bradley then flew the plane to China where we were taught to use chopsticks. We tried on a colourful Chinese robe and held a ‘real’ Chinese dragon. We landed back at Estcourt in time to go home, what a memorable day and fantastic experience we all had!
Thank you to Ms Silcock, Mrs Rogers, Bella’s Grandma and Mrs Philmore for giving up their Friday to travel with us.
