Extra Curricular
Sport
Boys have the opportunity to further their development out of school hours. The school runs teams in all the major games, and practices take place at lunchtime and after school. House competitions also take place out of school time.
Music
Boys who wish to pursue musical interests have a very varied choice. The school has a choir, an orchestra, a brass ensemble, a wind ensemble, a chamber choir and a big band. Concerts are given frequently both within and outside the school and there are regular rehearsals.
Societies
Boys may wish to become involved with the Chess club, the Junior Debating Society and the Drama club among others.
Theatre
The school takes advantage of any productions that are suitable for boys in their early years at Hulme.
Holidays abroad
Each year several school holidays are arranged. There is an annual ski trip and summer trip to Austria, and as many as three other trips to other European countries. Boys find these holidays both enjoyable and educational.
Combined Cadet Force
When boys reach Year 9, they have the opportunity to join the CCF. This is a disciplined, uniformed youth organisation, with a rank structure, designed to develop the cadet's powers of initiative, leadership and self-reliance. Run by officers on the school staff, it is regulated and financed by the Ministry of Defence. Successful, older cadets are promoted to NCO rank and progressively take up the challenge of responsibility for training and leading the younger cadets in such skills as weapon handling, navigation, drill, aircraft operation and infantry tactics. Regular trips away from school give opportunity for camping, rock climbing, canoeing, flying and hill walking in addition to military exercises.
Duke of Edinburgh's Award
Year 9 boys may embark upon the bronze award and then progress to silver and gold. The scheme is staffed not only by teachers but also by many parents and is thus an opportunity for home and school to work in close partnership.
