New Nursery Opens September 2009

News posted: 11-09-2009

Following work last year on the first phase refurbishment of Thornycroft House, a Grade II listed building, the second phase of a project to refurbish the Kindergarten of Oldham Hulme Grammar School started at the end of April and was completed just in time for the start of the school year. This latest project to refurbish and extend a 19th century coach house into a new Nursery area offered a considerable challenge given the condition of the existing building which had to be practically rebuilt.

In developing a modern and efficient space that meets all current regulations, but designed around the original features of the building, we have delivered an installation that is both contemporary in design and sympathetic to the historic character of the building.

With a capacity of 40 children, the main area of the new Nursery building is a large, light and airy open plan teaching space which can easily be sectioned off for smaller work groups as required. The large teaching space opens on to a covered outdoor play area which can be enclosed if the weather is particularly bad. This in turn leads to the Nursery’s own outdoor playground; both these areas have child friendly rubber crumb surfacing.

Back inside there are reading areas offering a little more privacy, and a separate teaching room for smaller group work. Everything from the toilets to the computer work stations has been designed with the little ones in mind. Meanwhile the teachers have a great work space with their own facilities and plenty of storage areas. The build incorporates all the latest technology including environmentally friendly lighting and radiant panel heating systems, points for interactive whiteboards, CCTV and door access systems.

Newly appointed head of Kindergarten Mrs Joan Wood said “It’s a fabulous modern and very bright building – colourful and spacious. A fun place for children and staff alike!!”

If you would like to make an appointment to view the nursery please contact Mrs Karen Allott on 0161 630 6255.
