La Chandeleur
News posted: 08-02-2010
As well as eating pancakes on Shrove Tuesday, French people also love to eat them to celebrate “La Chandeleur” on February 2nd each year. In England we call this day Candlemas and it is on the 40th day after Christmas. Candles are lit and the future is predicted.
Not wanting to miss out on a double helping of pancakes spread with Nutella and jam, Years 5 and 6 at Hulme Court and Estcourt joined in the celebrations in their French lessons this week.
In the middle of winter the colour and shape of the pancake remind us of the returning sun.
We learnt a special rhyme and how to toss a pancake holding a coin in out other hand to bring us good luck.
Mrs Headdock’s classes in Years 7, 8 and 9 also celebrated. The homework for years 8 and 9 was to make pancakes using a French recipe. They agreed that it was one of the best pieces of French homework they had ever had!!
